ETH Zurich Leads the Way to Database Innovation with Intel® Xeon Processor

eth.jpgAs one of the world’s top research centers, ETH Zurich needed to increase the scalability and throughput of its mission-critical databases while providing guaranteed response times. It evaluated a new distributed database platform built on the Intel® Xeon® processor E7-4860. The new system showed 33 percent more data processed for the same throughput as other platforms ETH considered. This distributed, multi-core platform enables optimum flexibility and scalability to support ETH’s growth and delivers better performance while remaining within the target response time of 2 seconds per query. The project has showed ETH a new way to build databases for the future.

“We saw a significant performance increase with the Intel Xeon processor E7 family,” explained Timothy Roscoe, professor in the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. “The Intel platform was ideal for this workload.”
