Intel® Xeon® Processor 5600 Series Lowers TCO and Raises the Performance Bar for C-MMACS and Domino Sugar

itc_cs-cmmac_xeon_carousel_preview.jpgIt’s a hard balancing act—but a crucially important one. How can your data center get both the high performance you need and a low total cost of ownership (TCO) that won’t break today’s increasingly fragile budgets? For C-MMACS and Domino Sugar, the solution was adding servers with Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series.

C-MMACS, one of the largest weather and oceanographic HPC users in India, needed more computing power for its demanding, data-intensive computing research environment. It implemented a192-processor, high-performance computing (HPC) cluster using the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series.

“SGI Altix ICE* 8400 EX systems with Intel Xeon processor 5600 series gave us the best solution in terms of price/performance,” says R.P. Thangavelu, a scientist at C-MMACS. “The unique combination of processor performance, memory bandwidth, and low-latency, high-bandwidth interprocessor communication outperformed, by a large margin, other competitive systems including the latest massively parallel processing (MPP) class systems in the price/performance evaluations done.”

Domino Sugar is migrating its SAP* and other essential IT infrastructure to an external, private, multi-tenanted cloud from Virtustream running on the Intel  Xeon processor 5600 series. With the move, Domino is doubling its SAP performance and expects to improve elasticity, enable faster disaster recovery, and reduce three-year TCO by up to 40 percent.

“What’s key is the size and complexity of Domino’s SAP environment,” says the company's CTO, Julian Box. “This is a very, very demanding environment. With the Intel Xeon processors, Virtustream’s deep infrastructure experience, and our ability to move the data as rapidly as the processors need it, we are delivering tangible benefits to Domino Sugar.”
