I had the privilege of sharing the stage with Mercer Rowe, Vice President, Strategic Partners IBM Cloud, at Cloud Expo West where we introduced the Intel® Optane™ SSD Innovator Testbed. The Testbed is powered by Lenovo servers running in IBM’s world-class cloud data centers, and will be available at the end of the year. Intel® Optane™ technology delivers improved SSD performance and efficiency and has the potential to revolutionize big data, high-performance computing, online gaming, and many other applications.
This latest collaboration reflects a long standing history of joint work between the companies. Recently, we collaborated on utilizing Intel platform capabilities to deliver improved security, data protection and compliance in the IBM Cloud. This work has extended to collaborations with leading enterprises like Marriott International, enabling the transition to hybrid cloud computing infrastructure utilizing Intel hardware-based security that addresses data protection and compliance needs including data segmentation, PCI compliance and geo-fencing data with certain countries.
Intel and IBM have also been developing workload optimized solutions, such as IBM Bluemix exposing the latest Intel processors (including Intel Xeon E5v4 processors) in their cloud infrastructure. More than 300k servers in IBM Bluemix are powered by Intel Xeon processors. Intel also enabled Bluemix with application optimized instances, security enabled instances, and the previously mentioned Intel® Optane™ SSD Innovator Testbed.
Innovations like these will fuel the next generation of enterprise class cloud service offerings and help enterprises adopt the right hybrid cloud strategy for their business growth. I look forward to more announcements with IBM in 2017.
