Another Chance to Prove your Chops & RuleTheStack at OpenStack Summit Paris

At the Kilo Design Summit, we will be announcing the new Ruler of the Stack. Last summit, the honors went to Dirk Mueller of SUSE who proved that he could create a functioning OpenStack cloud in 3 minutes and 14 seconds. Astonishing!

The new Ruler of the Stack will prove that they can quickly build a Highly Available OpenStack environment that can survive through a barrage of real world tests. Running an OpenStack based cloud that never goes down is the wish of every cloud operator; no admin wants to get called at 3am due to a problem in the infrastructure which is leading to problems for the business’ applications and services. We want to sleep right through it, and fix any issues in the morning after your cup of coffee and croissant.

So let’s prove out that this is possible, and lets reward the person that can make the most resilient OpenStack infrastructure!

Rules:

The competition we have heard will be fierce this summit so we are going to make this hard. First prove that you can create an OpenStack cloud with speed (like Dirk did last summit) and then make sure your cloud can handle attacks by our highly trained cloud breakers. We promise not to do things that wouldn’t happen in the real world.

You need to sign up for a time slot in booth F9. Once you have setup your environment, you turn the keys over to our expert cloud breakers. Their job is to figure out how to break the infrastructure, but under normal situations. Please give the admin access password to our cloud breakers (as well as the tenant name and password you created) or they will have to submit you to even more pesky attacks like power loss. After each attack, we will check to make sure we can still create a VM, and whether the existing VMs are still running.

Attack 1: One controller goes down

Attack 2: Individual service goes down of cloud breaker’s choice

Attack 3: Whole cluster of controllers goes down

Attack 4: One Nova node shut down

There will be a sign up sheet in 30 minute chunks at the Ruler of the Stack booth F9, stop by and sign up as soon as you can. Need an hour or more? You will have access to 8 physical servers with this configuration, you choose how you want to build the most resilient OpenStack cluster:

While you will have access to the internet, we strongly remind you that we are on a shared network on the demo floor, and network latency and pulling down files from github may not be the best way to go the fastest. So feel free to preload a USB stick or DVD so that you don’t have to wait on network transfer.

For more see what we did earlier year.
