Creating a Successful Marketing Strategy for a Small Business


In the past 14 years, I have had the pleasure of working with over a 100 small businesses, helping them fine tune their marketing strategies and teaching them various ways to reach new audiences and grow their businesses faster than ever before, and most importantly producing a positive ROI.

Here are some of my favorite marketing components in creating a successful marketing strategy.

1. Utilize Video - My best advice to all small businesses is that you quickly need to embrace video as a marketing tool. Luckily not all businesses are taking advantage of this quite yet and it provides a huge competitive opportunity for those who do. Video can be used in a number of ways. Some of the best are; customer testimonials, business product how-to-series, product demos, frequently asked questions, and meet the owner video. All of these various types of videos are eagerly being consumed by customers these days on their smart phones as they shop and do research prior to buying.  Video allows the business owner an unique opportunity to connect with customers before they even step foot in their store or possibly purchase an item online. It comes down to this, video is a relationship building tool and people buy from people they know and trust.

2.Engage in Social Media -  Secondly I'd recommend being actively involved in Social Media.  It's important to have a plan and work your plan to be successful. Like video, social media provides consumers an engagement opportunity and it's important that businesses realize this and are receptive and actively open to how consumers want to interact with businesses today. Great tactical approaches for social media might focus on customer service, sharing unique specials, creating interest through contests and sharing photos of behind the scenes interactions, photos ofstaff and product creation. Giving the consumer an unique experience that leaves them happy and likely to socially share with their friends is the business goal.

3. Have a Great Website - According to Smart Insights mobile usage has exceeded desktop computer usage and 81 % of searches on the internet are coming from mobile devices.  Therefore it is imperative that your website be mobile friendly and mobile optimized.  I believe businesses need to look at their website as one of their most valuable assets. The goal should always be to drive traffic back to your website and use it to build your business through direct sales, leads or advertising opportunities. Websites need to be designed professionally, always having the end users experience in mind.  It is so important to know exactly who your target audience is, once you do, it will help tremendously in writing the perfect content, having the right functionality and providing the right look and feel that appeals to them.

If businesses were to focus on these three marketing components and build a strategy from the ground up incorporating each of these marketing tools there is no doubt in my mind they would grow faster than ever before and show a positive ROI.
