The demand for faster time to market, design optimization, and cost reduction continues to drive the rapid adoption of workstation products. Today, I’m happy to announce the latest member of the Intel Xeon processor-based workstation family, the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-1600 v4. This processor includes hardware-enhanced security with Intel® vPro™ technology, which allows IT managers to secure and remotely manage their workstations as they would their business client PCs and hardware-enhanced error correction control (ECC) memory, which prevents memory bit errors than can cause incorrect results or operating system crashes. For application performance, the new processor delivers up to 1.6x more application throughput performance than a 4-year workstation based on the same Xeon E5-1600 processor line.

With the announcement of the Intel Xeon processor E5-1600 v4 from the above three vendors as well as Fujitsu*, Inspur*, and Supermicro*, we’re also seeing exciting new features added that will further enable better designs and faster time to market. One in particular will be very useful to users of frequency bound applications; CAD and content creation applications that perform better when you increase the processor frequency:

The Intel® Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0: This enables increased single and dual core turbo performance. With this feature enabled, the foreground application (or any application the user chooses) gets an extra boost of performance – up to 200 MHz – by getting up to two cores running in Turbo Boost dedicated to it. For example, if you have an 8-core processor, two of the 8 cores will run at up to 4 GHz and be dedicated to that application.

Other notable improvement on the Intel Xeon processor E5-1600 v4 include up to 8 cores/16 threads, up to 20M L3 cache, up to 2400MHz max memory speed with DDR4 (vs 2133MHz) and support for up to 3TB of memory in a single workstation system with new high throughput 3DS LRDIMMs. Below is a summary of Intel’s offering for desk-side and mobile workstations.
