How Do You Control All That Power?

I recently saw that Pirelli Tires is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their slogan “Power is nothing without control”, and while I was shocked it was that old, I realized that they could use it for so long because of one simple fact – it’s true!

We live in a time where everything has to happen in “real-time” and access to data needs to be instant, so the technology world is filled with endless claims of performance records. But there is a basic question normally missing from the narrative: How do you control all that power?

If you’re going to be in Orlando for Microsoft Ignite starting November 4, I invite you to come by the Cisco booth, 1213, to learn more about how Intel has partnered with Cisco to co-engineer the world’s first enterprise ready all-NVMe hyper-converged infrastructure solution, HyperFlex All NVMe with Intel® Optane™ caching.  This solution features the strength of Cisco’s HyperFlex platform while adding Intel® Xeon® processors, Intel® Optane™ DC SSDs and Intel® 3D NAND.

While NVMe drive technology is newer, it’s been around long enough to make its way into a lot of cloud server farms and storage products, but not in an HCI appliance until now. Why? Because as Pirelli so accurately stated, “Power is nothing without control” or great manageability in our case. NVMe drives don’t rely on traditional storage controllers (host bus adapters HBAs). So, while this improves performance, it leaves a usability gap without manageability (control), and related software. Cisco worked closely with Intel to incorporate Intel Volume Management Device (VMD) to overcome reliability, availability, and serviceability challenges. The result is an enterprise-class HCI solution that can deliver on both performance and manageability (with clear controls) for things like surprise drive removal errors, firmware management, LED drive status lights, and hot pluggable NVMe drives.

Microsoft Ignite is always one of the best technologies shows of the year, and nothing less is expected this year. If your planning to be at the show, we invite you to come see where power meets control. Stop by the Cisco booth to learn more about HyperFlex and Intel® Optane™ technologies.
