Hybrid Cloud Solutions Upgraded with New Intel Technology

Hybrid cloud is the infrastructure of choice for enterprises today. Most enterprises continue to invest in both private and public cloud options for improved operations and greater productivity. Hybrid cloud allows IT managers to control costs and increase security through optimized workload placement.

Even with all its benefits, hybrid cloud deployment is still a complex execution that requires a focus on interoperability and a number of processes to ensure services and applications work properly. To meet these needs, Intel has created several reference architectures available in Intel® Select Solutions for Hybrid Cloud. With the release of 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors and public availability of Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory, we are updating two hybrid cloud solutions that launch this month and take full advantage of the improved performance and features.

Intel® Select Solutions for Microsoft Azure Stack HCI*

Intel® Select Solutions for Microsoft Azure Stack HCI* is an upgrade of Intel Select Solutions for Windows Server* Software Defined Storage. The new Intel Select Solutions for Microsoft Azure Stack HCI are designed for IT leaders who want to accelerate virtualized traffic between nodes and improve total cost of ownership (TCO) on their modern hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI). Combining the latest hardware from Intel and software from Microsoft, the updated solutions form the basis for flexible and agile HCI. Complete with reference designs tailored to the different computing, memory, and storage needs at the edge and in the data center, the solutions help IT move to HCI while significantly reducing evaluation time.

Microsoft and Intel have collaborated to optimize Microsoft Hyper-V* and Storage Spaces Direct in Windows Server 2019* to provide native support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory. This offers breakthrough storage performance with more memory per node. Enabling more persistent memory, at a cost similar to DRAM systems, gives hybrid cloud managers the tools to create faster databases and solve larger, more complex business problems – as well as the flexibility to be used as both memory and storage in this architecture. The new 4-node configuration minimum performance standard for the Intel Select Solution optimized for the data-center offers 65% improved IoPS with 4x better latency, when compared to the previous version.1 These improvements enable Intel and Microsoft to bring datacenter HCI performance to the edge of your business with a new 2-node optimized configuration capable of delivering a minimum of 198K IOPS with ~2ms read/write latency.2

Intel Select Solutions for Microsoft Azure Stack HCI feature the same software-defined compute, storage, and networking software as our Azure Stack solutions, and can integrate with Azure for hybrid capabilities such as cloud-based backup, site recovery, monitoring, and more. DataON and Lenovo have announced future availability of Intel Select Solutions for Microsoft Azure Stack HCI in the coming months.

Intel® Select Solutions for VMware vSAN*

Intel® Select Solutions for VMware vSAN* are designed to help IT organizations deliver simple, secure, agile cloud infrastructure via software-defined compute, storage, and networking. IT teams increasingly base their hybrid clouds on a uniform operating environment between their public services and their private data centers. VMware provides IT professionals a common framework to manage and deploy workloads across multiple environments using a single toolkit.

With the upgraded version of Intel® Select Solutions for VMware vSAN*, hyper-converged storage virtualization configurations are optimized for performance and security across more mission critical and larger VMs on vSAN. We anticipate that providing the industry with pre-configured solutions, Intel and VMware can help IT managers reduce application testing and validation cost to accelerate their time to value. With the addition of 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory, this solution is tailored to handle the most demanding, business-critical applications. A number of partners are already committed to delivering the new solutions this year, including Inspur, Lenovo, Sugon, Supermicro, and WWT.

A Broad Portfolio Built for Optimized Workloads

Intel, in partnership with many leading ISVs, offers a range of workload optimized configurations for hyper-converged infrastructure and hybrid cloud solutions, including Intel® Select Solutions for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform* and Intel® Select Solution for Blockchain: Hyperledger Fabric. All of these solutions are upgradeable with 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors being announced today, and OEMs – including Lenovo - will be refreshing their designs in the coming months. Intel will also be upgrading Intel Select Solution for Blockchain: Hyperledger Fabric in Q2 to fully utilize other elements of our data-centric portfolio.

Joining the family of hybrid cloud solutions is the new Intel® Select Solution for Hardened Security with Lockheed Martin*. This solution is a hardened virtualization platform addressing a full range of security controls. It offers improved availability through more deterministic quality of service and protections from noisy neighbors, greater data confidentiality through VM encryption/isolation, and robust integrity with a chain of trust from boot through runtime. Mercury and Supermicro have announced intent to offer future availability of this Intel Select Solution in the coming months; additional hardened security solutions will be coming from other partners, like HPE, soon.
