SGI Integrates Next Generation Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2600 Family

SGI is the trusted leader in technical computing, and the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 family is the perfect engine under the hood. SGI has been shipping servers based on Intel® Xeon® processors E5-2600 family to our customers in the public cloud since September 2011.  Today we can ship more than 26 Teraflops in a single rack with our SGI® ICE™ X platform, and we’ll be doubling that capability in the coming months.

The SGI® Modular InfiniteStorage server, designed from the ground up using Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 microprocessors is one of the densest storage platforms in the market. Finally, our entire Rackable™ line is one of the most flexible rack mount servers in the business and has been upgraded to the new processor, allowing the use of Intel® Power Node Manager for fine-grained power management across the entire line.

Our SGI ICE line allows customers to start small with an architecture that can scale to 100s of racks, and then add, typically with no user interruption, additional racks with similar or later technology. NASA-Ames participated in a case study using ICE that exhibited this exact situation. Pleiades, the #7 system on the Top 500 list, had more modest beginnings but has been upgraded through three generations of Intel® Xeon® microprocessors, and in the next few months will be receiving another upgrade based on Intel® Xeon® E5-2600. This machine is used to design spacecraft; to do climate research; and to explore the universe. Recently a scientist ran a code of over 25,000 threads on the machine to explore ‘space weather,’ the effect of the sun on the earth. To see how NASA takes advantage of ‘live integration’ of new ICE racks into Pleiades, you can read the case study on supercomputing at NASA.
